Has anyone seen the remote?

Much fondling of joysticks from a couple of homies today over Nintendo's announced new console's controller.

I remain unconvinced. It is no-doubt an impressive and revolutionary idea and in the oft-shown “nunchuk” mode with a thumstick-on-a-string could well drag FPS control on consoles to something approaching the mobility you get with a mouse. Hands-on reports have been largely positive but I wonder if anyone has used if for more than a few minutes.

Try this test: see how long you can hold your hands out - without resting your elbows on anything - in the pose shown in the press release? Five minutes? Ten? Thirty? What about when moving one of your hands around a bit? Or try it with resting your elbows on something - I'm not sure it's an improvement.

We'll see anyway, I doubt my scepticism will have much effect, though it's good to know I'm not alone in it smile

Lol! Nice comic.

Fanboyism aside, I agree there are issues that remain to be experienced before any real conclusion can be drawn.

The true cause for my excitement is that this is something totally new, like the Nintendo DS (because no good games have been made for PDAs previously, TBH). And if anybody can do it, it is Nintendo. They've been revolutionizing gaming for two decades now, so I have faith in them.

One thing to consider about the possibility of your arm getting tired is if you should be playing games that long. I think about this more and more as I get older and find that I have less and less time. It really is pretty disgusting when I spend my whole Saturday playing World of Warcraft. Maybe it is a good thing if a game gets me tired enough to give it a break. That sounds pretty lame and doesn't even convince me but I just thought I'd throw it out there. Lol.

Another aspect is that maybe people will actually get some measure of exercise playing these games, rather than wasting away on the couch. Imagine a sports game where you actually use your arms somewhat to at least keep them from becoming stiff.

Again, it isn't quite so much that I am convinced. It is that I am excited to try something completely new and different.

And yet they've conspicuously failed to get me to play a single one of their games or buy any one of their consoles in that time.

I don't know... I just have a “Emperor's new clothes” feeling about them. From what I read, they got their first console out after Atari had theirs. And it post-dated the 8-bit computer explosion in the UK, even if they'd released it when it was released in Japan rather than four years later.

The SNES was released after the Amiga was out. The N64 was cartridge-based when everyone else had already switched to CDs (and let's not forget the PlayStation grew out of a prospective CD drive for the SNES).

They seem to have a lot of franchises people like, but beyond that they don't seem amazingly revolutionary or anything.
