Extras
I'm not normally a fan of “embarrassment humour” - I could barely watch The Office (though my Dad loved it - said it reminded him of places he'd worked) - and though I had to watch the last few minutes of Thursday's episode of Extras through my fingers, it's grown on me since the first episode. The episode, playing off Samuel L. Jackson's cameo, ran down the very narrow track of race relations humour. Maggie's attempts to chat up a black actor on the set always seemed to spiral into hideous and accidental racist statements (He: “there aren't many roles for black actors” She: “well, there's always Crimewatch”
whilst Andy had to deal with an apparently unknowingly gay stalker (“I've bought you a present - two tickets to the musical 'We Will Rock You'”
. The final scene, where Maggie, trying to show she isn't racist, announces to all and sundry - including the passing Jackson - that she doesn't like Reggae or Jazz is both incrediblely embarrassing and painfully funny.
