Mindjack - Piracy is Good?

I was going to mention how the MPAA's suing of six BitTorrent tracker sites with links to torrents of TV shows was stupid and small-minded, but couldn't really put together anything that didn't wander off into incoherence. In lieu of that, here's an article showing why it's stupid and small-minded (via Warren Ellis).
“The British aficionados of [Battlestar Galactica] provided torrents for each episode within a few hours of each broadcast. Many fans in the US picked them up and watched them; so did many people in Australia.

While you might assume the SciFi Channel saw a significant drop-off in viewership as a result of this piracy, it appears to have had the reverse effect: the series is so good that the few tens of thousands of people who watched downloaded versions told their friends to tune in on January 14th, and see for themselves. From its [US] premiere, Battlestar Galactica has been the most popular program ever to air on the SciFi Channel, and its audiences have only grown throughout the first series. Piracy made it possible for "word-of-mouth" to spread about Battlestar Galactica.”

Interesting article but I must disagree with a few points.

We don't pay for cable at home for choice. We pay for cable because there are certan shows we want to watch. Let me pay less but restrict me to those shows? PLEASE!

I think people would pay money to download shows. I hate trying to find a good torrent site to get whatever show. Then I have to wait for it to download, since there are, initially, far more downloaders than uploaders.

Let me pay a dollar to download an episode and I'll never watch cable again. I'd even go for 2 or 3 dollars. Going up from there is just getting greedy, though.

Heck, let me SUBSCRIBE to a series. I'll pay you 30 bucks a year to watch Family Guy. How about that? Considering one series of Family Guy costs 30-50 bucks from a retail store (depending on where/when you get it), that's 30 bucks of pure profit going to the producers.

Yes, I'm going to split the cost with my roommate and put the video in my shared folder. But guess what? If you put some stupid digital rights protection on it, I'll just call him into the room to watch it on my screen.

Oh and I would really hate to see advertisements on my screen throughout the episode. I can get up and pee during commercials. And I hate product placement enough as it is!
