“The Australian magazineSmarthouse quotes the Marketing Manager of Acer Australia as saying 'The decision to delay Vista into the consumer market will have an impact on hardware sales particularly in the Media Centre market. We have been told that Microsoft has bought in programmers from the Xbox team to work on the problems. We have also been told that up to 60 per cent of the code will have some form of re writing or changes made.' Microsoft has since vehemently denied the story.”

Not-Overheard In New York

March 25, 2006
Weird... Overheard in New York seems to have started censoring their RSS feed. Here's the difference between the site and what Bloglines is seeing:
C________rs

I guess this is related to them putting Yahoo! publisher ads in their feed - like how Fark had to move all their Boobies posts to Foobies.com (and, destroy a lot of the fun by not having comment threads for them) at the behest of their advertisers.

Something about this ad is putting me off...

Meh

You had me at “gapless”

March 24, 2006
My first “mp3” player was a Rio Karma because it had a 20GB drive and played Ogg files. It broke around the time Rio's owners were getting out of the player business. So I reluctantly switched to an iRiver iriver H320 - reluctantly because, whilst it played Oggs and had a 20GB drive, it didn't do gapless playback. I've lived with the annoying jump between tracks for a while now, through a couple of firmware updates that did little more than add a very limited video playback feature after Apple viddied up it's iPod.

The other day though, I saw a link - on Waxy or Kottke I think - for the Rockbox, an open source replacement for the firmware with gapless playback. The H3x0 version is allegedly “only for developers” but seems pretty decent even now (and includes a version of Bejeweled). They even do iPod versions for those afflicted by that device...

“Rockbox for the iriver iHP100 series, H100 series, and H300 series features a very wide range of codec support and sound configuration! Supported formats include MP3, OGG, FLAC, AAC, ALAC, AC3 and WavPack. Rockbox for these irivers also features gapless playback and crossfading! A five-band parametric equalizer allows fine-tuning output, ReplayGain support allows you to normalize your volume levels, and a large amount of plugins (games - many in full color on the H300 series - applications, and "demos" wink allow you to have some fun when you're bored, or put one of our multiple applications to use: open files with the text viewer, time yourself with the stopwatch, view some JPEG photos, or turn your iriver into a desktop clock with the clock plugin. On-The-Go playlist creation and adjustment, full file bookmarking support, Recording and FM Recording with a variety of settings and features are more key points of Rockbox for the iriver iHP-1x0, H1x0 and H3x0 series.”

Rumours abound: Raph Koster, amongst others, has departed SOE, possibly for Bioware; all extant SWG boxes have been pulled off shelves prior to a new full price box in July and LucasArts has pulled the Star Wars licence (or license if you insist) from SOE with and Bioware taking it over.

Some of this smells of wishful thinking from annoyed ex-fans of the original game - Raph, for all his skills, was in charge for the original version of SWG which, whilst seemingly a bigger draw than the new version, was deemed unsufficiently Star Warsy for Lucasart's tastes. I can't see them giving him a second bite at the cherry when he failed at the first (not that I've played the original SWG - but it always seemed more tilted towards MMOG-as-World rather than the casual-friendly Star Wars game Lucasarts wanted). Nevertheless, I could see the other decisions being made and being and kept under wraps as much as possible to avoid spooking the remaining SWG subscribers.

Update: Raph is leaving SOE. Everything else has been denied.

The march of technology

March 21, 2006
The other day, getting a minicab home from the pub I noted the driver was using a PDA with GPS to guide him (unlike the sainted Black Cab whi perforce must learn The Knowledge). As I was a touch tired and emotional I did not press the driver much for info on it. Today though, I took a cab back from the garage where I'd dropped off the car for a service and MOT and he had the same (or a similar) device. We got to discussing it because, as it turned out, it was programmed from back at the cab's HQ and whoever had done this one seemingly had no idea how to do this. As a result, it spent the entire journey shouting out imperious commands to, effectively, turn the car around and head back to our starting point: “After 100 yards turn left! Turn left again! Turn left again! Turn right!” or “At the roundabout take the fourth exit!” or, on one occasion, “Do a U-turn!”. Unfortunately, the volume can neither be lowered nor can the route be adjusted or cancelled from the cab so we had to suffer through it.

Vertigo 42

March 16, 2006
So, last night I went to Vertigo 42 with my old friend Siobhan, ostensibly since she owed me a meal for missing my birthday last year - but also to celebrate her impending nuptials to her boyfriend Rob. Vertigo 42 is a champagne bar at the top of Tower 42, previously known as the NatWest Tower and one-time tallest building in London. The view outside is very cool, albeit spoiled somewhat by the glass reflecting some idiot when I was taking a photo.

Drunk as a lord

March 16, 2006
It's 2.30am and I just got back home. We went to Vertigo 42 for dinner and then on to a pub called The Rose for a lock-in. Thanks to the cab driver who got me home, as I can't see straight any more. Night smile

Correction: Well, might not have been a lock-in - I forgot pubs can open 24-hours these days.

Pie > Wallace > Gromit

March 12, 2006
A travesty!
“Wallace was worth more because of his moving parts, facial expressions and clothes, meaning it takes longer to make a new one. The pie-making machine from Chicken Run was so complicated it was valued at £100,000. A total of more than £500,000 was received for all the damage.”

Hot or not

March 12, 2006
So, The Breakfast Club was on BBC1 after Match of the Day tonight. I don't recall seeing it when it came out (and the IMDB doesn't list it as being released here anyway) so I missed when it would have resonated better with my teenage angst. Still, I think it's a good movie - but, does anyone else think Ally Sheedy looked way hotter as the basket-case than when Molly Ringwald dolled her up?

Planet Earth

March 11, 2006
Planet Earth The BBC's latest nature series started last week, and I just got around to watching the first ep: Pole to Pole. It's basically vignettes of life on the planet, from top to bottom, with some incredible shots - including some from a new helicopter-mounted steady-cam that can zoom in from 1km away. My favourite though was the slow-motion shots of the Great White hunting seals:

“The schools standards minister, Jacqui Smith, said in a parliamentary answer that pupils were encouraged to explore different views, theories and beliefs in many different subjects, including science.

"Creationism is one of many differing beliefs which pupils might discuss and consider, perhaps when they learn about another aspect of science: 'ways in which scientific work may be affected by the contexts in which it takes place... and how these contexts may affect whether or not ideas are accepted'," she said.”

I will probably come as no surprise for people who've... discussed... things with me that the finale of my Dad's 60th birthday/retirement party was my brother being thrown out of my parents' bedroom after he entered at 1.30am and tried to continue his ever-so-slightly alcohol-fueled theory that Descartes was wrong when he said “cogito ergo sum”.

It's come to a pass when the unelected branch of the government is the one that's managing to protect our freedoms.
“Tony Blair's government was defeated by the House of Lords on Monday over the controversial issue of national identity cards.

The peers voted by a majority of 61 to overturn the government's plan and make the cards voluntary. The bill will now return to the House of Commons for further debate.”

March 05, 2006
This kind of thing is one of the cooler aspects of MMOGs I think.
“The Dereth Museum was founded in Morninthaw 25, 67 P.Y. by Damien Sarin, the original author of The Aerlinthe Report. Its goal is to promote understanding through the arts, natural history and science. Since its inception, the Dereth Museum has been guided by three important principles: the collections are to be held in perpetuity in their entirety; they are a community enterprise available to all, down to the newest inhabitants of Dereth; they are cared for by full-time specialists.”
