See if you can qualify for being British (I got 10/14).
“The government is launching the citizenship test for foreigners who want to become British. If you want the passport, then you'll have to read Life in the UK, a special book, and sit a 45-minute test on society, history and culture. But do you know what it is to be British? The following very unofficial questions are based on information in the official book - let's see how well you do...”

...would you people stop messing with mine?
“When Becky Demmitt tells her students that she doesn't celebrate Halloween, many assume she must be a Jehovah's Witness.

"I don't celebrate a holiday that celebrates everything evil and bad," said Demmitt, a teacher at Ellis Arts Academy and member of Faith Center of Rockford, a Christian church. "I keep my light off at my door on Halloween so kids don't come, only to have to explain I don't do Halloween."”

I was in the local Gamestation, trading in a few console games for F.E.A.R. and Black & White 2 when the impending arrival of Christmas forced two non-gamers in. One, an elderly lady, was attempting to buy the Sims 2 on PC, slowly eliminating the many Sims expansions on the shelves by bringing them, one-by-one, to the counter and asking the clerk if it matched the title written on a small scrap of paper.

The other lady, looking more a well off middle-aged mother, was attempting to pre-order an Xbox 360. Well, eventually - after she'd tried to order a Nintendo 360 and a Sony 360. The clerk told even if she ordered it now, it wouldn't be in until February.

Some think this is a ploy by Microsoft to get publicity. From the lady above, it would seem they need it...
“But let's step back. Could it be a trade-off Microsoft is willing to make? Officially they would have us believe that the little elves Mr Gates keeps in his dungeon are working overtime to make as many boxes of magic as they can. But maybe, come December 2nd, when the mainstream media report that 360s are sold out across the globe, it won't be all that bad. Maybe the kudos has been planned all along. Maybe it's a deliberate ploy.”

“I have to admit, this is the very first that I'm hearing on it, but according to the "Wrestling Observer Newsletter", WWE Superstar John Cena, coming up next in "The Marine" opposite "Nip/Tuck" star Kelly Carlson, is apparently up for the lead role in a remake of 1987's Arnold Schwazenegger starrer, "Predator".”

Robots Miniview

October 27, 2005
20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios' Robots was in the post today. The plot's a little light - basically your average small-town hero goes to the big city and saves it from the evil business thang - and the casting is from the school of famous names variety. However the animation is gorgeous and it rattles along nicely enough within it's limitations. I'll give it a B.

State of the mail

October 26, 2005
The mail changeover went rather smoothly. In an unconnected move, I've also had to switch from Mailblocks because AOL shut them down.
“Per the email sent to all current Mailblocks customers, the Mailblocks email service will be discontinued on November 16, 2005.

We hope you've enjoyed your spam-free Mailblocks account and thank you for your continued support. We apologize for any inconvenience this transition may cause and we hope you continue enjoying our free spam-free and virus-free email service from AIM Mail.”

Say goodbye to spam with Mailblocks high performance email service

The AIM mail is nowhere near anything like that which Mailblocks supplied, so I'm trying to find a replacement challenge/response service. Spam Arrest is first in the testing line.

Movie Mini-Reviews

October 23, 2005
The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy: the problem, I think, with compressing what took several episodes on both radio and TV into one film is that they had to cut a lot - what is perplexing is why they cut most of the punchlines. Worse, is that I remember then and was filling them in as they went along. If it wasn't for prior knowledge, it would probably be a half-way decent film. I did like the tributes to the original Marvin and Simon Jones as the warning voice at Magrathea was a nice touch too. C+

Spot the flaw

October 21, 2005
I have a friend who likes to forward on all the chain letters or fake virus alerts they get. This the most recent - see if you can spot why it was pointless once it got past the first ten people:

OK, OK, OK, I know no one likes these things, but this is supposedly for a kid's science fair project, and I've been instructed not to mess this up under penalty of well, something dreadful. Here's the deal: Copy and paste this letter into a new email (Do not just hit “Forward” wink , then read the list of names below. If your name is on the list, put a star * next to it. If not, then add your name (in alphabetical order, put no star.) Send it to ten people and send it back to the person who sent it to you. Put your name in the subject box! You'll see what happens - it's kind of cool! Please keep this going. Don't MESS it up, please.

Intelligent destruction

October 21, 2005
“Scientist: Perhaps it only appears that I broke your kneecap. Certainly, all the evidence points to the hypothesis I broke your kneecap. For example, your kneecap is broken; it appears to be a fresh wound; and I am holding a baseball bat, which is spattered with your blood. However, a mere preponderance of evidence doesn't mean anything. Perhaps your kneecap was designed that way.”

Time Sinks

October 13, 2005
The schizophrenic nature of multiplayer gameing is affecting Turbine now, as they develop technology to give different players a different view of the same bit of scenery depending on which quests they've completed.
“As an example, as you may have seen at E3, a beginning Man or Woman completes a ”tutorial“ instance in a Brigand camp, and then enters the game proper in Archet - a village that is having trouble with some local brigands, not to mention a certain black rider in seach of a certain Hobbit (oops, did I say that?). This first part of the game is an instance and is limited to newbie players only. After questing their way through the storyline, the newbie player will discover that the bandits are planning to raid Archet by breaking through the wall in the rear of the town. This triggers a private instance; the player will experience the raid on a burning Archet with only themselves and whomever is in their fellowship at the time. When the raid is over and our hero(es) victorious, they will be transferred into the ”real“ game world, the persistent massively-multiplayer world. Now, when the player returns to Archet, they will be entering the completely uncovered persistent world and find that key buildings are burnt to the ground. This is how Archet will appear to them from this point on in the game. This would not be possible without instancing.”

MMORPG.COM - Lord of the Rings Online : Interview with Jeffrey Steefel

I think it'd be more interesting if Archet appeared burnt to the ground for everyone depending on whether the players had saved it. But then I do realise that's more work than “instanced” theme park quests - if only there were some way beyond the original purchase price of games for companies to get extra money to provide content. Oh well.

The price of gasoline

October 12, 2005
£0.999
£0.999,
originally uploaded by Auz.

This was the price of petrol per litre up around John o' Groats.

Though some of the prices of the less commonly used forms of vehicular power were actually over the £1/litre mark, I think there's an unspoken barrier of 99.9p the garages stick to for unleaded.

Ninety-thousand and one

October 07, 2005
I Got back to Inverness late last night - but in time to watch House. Between the previous posts I stopped off at Canisbay Church to see the grave of Jan de Groot, after whom John o' Groats was named. Then I drove back via Thurso and down the A897, a single track lane down a river valley. Just after leaving Dunnet Head I noticed I'd hit 90,001 miles on the car's odometer. Guess I'll have to book it in for a service when I'm back.

90,001

Can't get any further north

October 06, 2005
Checking in from Dunnet Head - very windy here, though its still sunny. The mobile phone reception is better than at John o' Groats though.

From further north than you

October 06, 2005
I'm posting this from the car park at John o' Groats - not quite the most northerly point in mainland Britain, but the furthest distance from the other end of Britain at Land's End. There's nary a cloud in the sky, so, despite the wind it's actually quite warm. I'm in a T-shirt with the car windows open. I've bought a few trinkets for family and friends - now I'm going to head west to Dunnet Head - which is the most northerly point in mainland Britain - and then Thurso and back to Inverness.

A successful hunt

October 05, 2005
The Telly hunt today went off very well. We managed to bag a 28" Flat and Widescreen one, with Freeview and a stand. Thankfully, it detects 4:3 and 16:9 ratio signals and adjusts accordingly, saving Grandma the embarrasment my parents suffer when they're caught watching 4:3 broadcasts in 16:9 and haven't noticed how fat everyone is looking. And with Freeview Grandma can watch QVC as well as UKTV Cooking and Tuner Classic Movies - though I have forborne from mentioning the two pr0n channels she also now gets (though I think they're subscription anwyay...).

Captured!

Tomorrow, the plan is to head for John o' Groats, a mere 100 miles up the cost. Not, from what I've read, a scintillating place to visit apart from being able to say you've been, but the journey is said to be beautiful.

Further North

October 04, 2005
Arrived in Inverness. After the 229 miles from London to Milnsbridge it was another 400 to get here. I managed it in about seven hours - including lunch - which isn't too bad.

Tomorrow I've been invited to head into the Scottish hills to hunt down a new Telly for Grandma, since her current one has expired. Probably going to get her a Freeview box too.

Some sad news in that Ronnie Barker has died. The Two Ronnies, Porridge and Open All Hours were TV staples during my childhood.

Hit the north

October 03, 2005
Arrived in the wilds of Milnsbridge to stay with my aunt and uncle, their 88-year old tortoise Tiffy, two cats (Sooty and Robbie) and a couple of wild Foxes they've started feeding. The house they live in - and have lived in as long as I remember - is right on the edge of the valley the town surrounds and the garden is this wonderful multi-level things that was an absolute joy to play in as a kid.

Tomorrow is the eight-hour or so drive up to Inverness.

What was it...

En vacance

October 01, 2005
I'm officially on the first proper two-week holiday in several years. I head up to see Granny in Inverness for a few days on Monday, with a stop-off in Yorkshire to see some Uncles and Aunts there. The rest of the time I plan to visit places in the UK I really should have visited before - Stonehenge is something I'd like to see and maybe in Scotland I'll see if I can make it to John o' Groats. I bought a book called Bollocks to Alton Towers which lists interesting places off the beaten track, albeit in badly organised form.

Work is being very dilligent about not bothering me... they waited until 11am today before asking for help...
